What is book layout
design & formatting?
For printed books, formatting is the design of the inside of your book, page by page.
For fiction, it involves designing the front matter- such as the table of contents, copyright, etc - chapter heading styles, and finally the text itself. The design features and font choices will be relevant to your genre, and expressive of it. In addition, the text will be clean, even, beautifully spaced, and precise.
For non-fiction, book layout design can additionally involve integrating images, illustrations, diagrams, charts, tables, quotes, citations, references and more. For more information on non-fiction formatting, please visit this page.

how does book formatting work?
STEP 1 - Video or Email Consultation
You'll send me your manuscript, so that I can assess the scope of the layout task. I'll look at the word count, images and graphics included, any tables, charts, special features such as pop up boxes, pull quotes, tip highlights, citations and references. I'll plan the layout side of the project, and send a quote. We'll discuss how we want the layout to look and feel.
STEP 2 - layout sample designs
This is the brainstorming stage. I will create 2 unique interior samples, usually of one chapterof your book. There I'll explore fonts choices, heading styles, spacing, and any special designfeatures that we might include. For non-fiction, I'll create a hierarchy for headings, subheadings and plain text that aids the legibility of the book's content, and think about how to lay out any special sections.
STEP 3 - choosing a design
We'll bring one design forward and I'll make any adjustments necessary based on your feedback
STEP 4 - TYPESETTING THE WHOLE BOOK
I'll take our chosen design, and format the whole book. This involves applying styling to all chapters, creating running heads, page numbering, carefully attending to textual features such as italics, bolding and so on, and then creating a beautiful even look to the text (no lone single words or lines, no bigger spaces between words) by making subtle adjustments. For complex books such as textbooks, photobooks, or manuals, this is a longer and more creatively driven process of individual page design, skillfully combining images and text in inventive ways, which support rather than obscure absorption of information.
step 5 - revision rounds
You will review the formatted draft. I offer unlimited revisions, until we're happy that everything is perfect.
step 6 - FINAL PRINT-READY Files
I'll provide the final upload-ready PDFs for any printer of your choice, including Amazon KDP, Ingram, Lulu, B&N, and so forth.
Featured project
See inside this recent full-colour formatting project.
I creatively managed the whole project, designing and
implementing a coherent, playful yet serious design theme of
fonts, author portraits, colours, and illustrations.
book formatting costs
Formatting costs for both print and ebook are calculated according to word count,
plus the particular complexity of the text and laoyut needs.
So fiction is usually the least costly, with a novel of 50,000 words costing $349. However, non-fiction or books with images, tables, graphs, footnotes, or endnotes will cost more. For an accurate estimate, request a quote, attaching your manuscrupt. I will look through it thoroughly and send you the costings back
within 1 business day.
